A recent paper for the Social Market Foundation has reported that there will be a significant increase in demand for places at UK universities in the future. The papers author, David Willets, reported that over the course of the next 20 years, the demand for places at UK universities will increase from the current level of 368,000 to around 460,000.
The report, which calls for significant expansion in the number of universities places attributes much of the demand down to the recent 'baby boom' where there has been a significant increase in the number of births since the turn of the century. Willets go on to state that as education standards continue to increase on average, the demand for places across UK universities is likely to increase by approximately 90,000.
